Every year the Odessa American hosts an annual Halloween pumpkin carving/designing contest, inviting everyone, including the art students of ECISD, to participate and show off their fun pumpkin designing ideas.

“Permian High School has taken first place for the past three years and we’re looking to take first again this year,” Laree Morris said.

The Odessa American puts the pictures of all of the pumpkins online for readers to look at and vote on and whoever gets the most votes receives the winning trophy.

Voting for the best Jack o’ lantern closes today and results come out on OA online on Halloween.

There is no need to be an incredible artist, anyone is welcome to join the competition, all it takes is dedication, hard work and time.

“We have been working on the pumpkins for a little over a month now but it wasn’t until the last week that we really hit it hard and focused on them,” Junior Hunter Tippit, the co-artist of the pumpkin “Hell Yeah” and first year art student, said.

Most of the pumpkins Permian has submitted into the competition have had over 40 hours of work put into them.

“There has been days this week that many of the art students have stayed up at Permian until eight at night,” Tippit said.

For anyone interested in seeing some of the pumpkins that have been submitted into the competition, they are kept in the front office of Permian for all students and faculty to see.

“It was hard making these pumpkins but by the end of it all I really liked my pumpkin and was proud of my work, and that’s pretty rare for an artist,” Senior Aubrianna Saxton, the artist of the pumpkin “Fairy Tree”, said.
